Politico: Two US Departments weigh plans to easing economic sanctions on Syria

Washington, SANA-Politico revealed that the US State Department and Treasury Department are considering plans to ease economic sanctions imposed on Syria.

The US State Department senior official Paul Guaglianone sent a letter to the senior member of the US Senate Banking Committee Elizabeth Warren earlier this month, revealing heated discussions about the US administration’s closeness to Syria and the establishment of relations between the two sides, the American newspaper reported.

In the letter, a copy of which was obtained by Politico, Guaglianone said: “The end of Assad’s brutal and oppressive rule presents a historic opportunity for Syria and its people to rebuild their country away from Iranian and Russian influence”, pointing to the US move last January to issue general licenses to Syria, specifically designed for exemptions from certain sanctions, to facilitate the provision of basic services, indicating that the US is considering issuing more.

The State Department, in coordination with the Treasury Department, is considering a package of additional options to support U.S. policy goals, including additional exemptions and licenses, as well as assistance from foreign partners and allies, in his letter Guaglianone added.

The newspaper noted that analysts and diplomats believe that promoting economic development in this crucial transitional phase in Syria, and embracing the country’s new leadership, could help the country recover and could help the United States finally crush the terrorist group ISIS.

The newspaper noted that Warren and Senator Joe Wilson responded to Guaglianone’s letter and that their letter demonstrated bipartisan Republican and Democratic Congress interest in pressuring the Trump administration to reset U.S. relations with Syria.
