Canada announces plans to ease Syria sanctions, appoint ambassador

Ottawa-SANA-Canada announced its intention to ease its financial sanctions on Syria and appoint a non-resident ambassador to Damascus.

“Sanctions will be eased to allow funds to be sent through some banks, such as the Central Bank of Syria,” AFP quoted Canada’s Foreign Ministry as saying in a statement, stating that these previously imposed sanctions have been used as a tool against the defunct Assad regime, and that easing them will help enable the stable and sustainable delivery of aid, support local redevelopment efforts, and contribute to a rapid recovery in Syria.

The Canadian Foreign Ministry clarified that Canadian Ambassador to Lebanon, Stephanie McCollum, will assume an additional task as she has also been appointed non-resident ambassador to Syria.
