Erdogan welcomes EU suspension of Syria sanctions

Ankara, SANA- Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, expressed his country’s satisfaction with the European Union’s decision to suspend some European sanctions imposed on Syria.

“Erdogan welcomed, during a phone call with the President of the European Council, António Costa, the exemptions provided by the European Union regarding the sanctions imposed on Syria in order to rebuild this country.”Anadolu Agency quoted the Turkish Presidency Communications Department as saying in a statement on Friday.

For his part, Costa said that “we appreciate Ankara’s role as a crucial regional and global actor in these challenging times,” adding that “we look forward to collaborating closely to secure lasting peace in Ukraine and support a democratic and inclusive transition in Syria,”

The EU announced the suspension of a number of sanctions and restrictive measures earlier that it had been imposed on Syria amid the deposed regime.
