Damascus, March 10 (SANA) Four first-leg matches in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 will be played on Tuesday as Europe’s top clubs begin the knockout stage.
Turkish side Galatasaray host Liverpool at Rams Park in Istanbul at 8:45 p.m. Damascus time. Galatasaray advanced after a strong performance in the playoff round, while Liverpool is seeking to revive their European campaign.
Three other matches will follow at 11:00 p.m. Damascus time.
In England, Newcastle United host Barcelona at St James’ Park in a rematch of a group-stage meeting earlier in the competition that Barcelona won.
Atalanta face Bayern Munich at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, with the German champions entering the tie as favourites despite Atalanta’s attacking style and strong home record.
In Madrid, Atletico Madrid take on Tottenham Hotspur at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium in what is expected to be a tactical encounter between Diego Simeone’s disciplined defensive approach and Tottenham’s fast-paced counterattacking play.
The results of Tuesday’s matches will shape the return legs scheduled for next week as teams compete for places in the Champions League quarter-finals.
