New York, July 26 (SANA) U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said on Sunday that Syria’s Sednayah military prison stands as a symbol of the brutality of the repression carried out by the country’s deposed regime, adding that Syria now has an opportunity to recover from years of conflict and build a more stable, inclusive and prosperous future.
In a post on X, Guterres said Sednayah prison showed “how horrendous the oppression” had been during the years of the deposed regime, stressing that the current period offers Syria an opportunity to advance its recovery and lay the foundations for lasting stability and development.
“Today, Syria is facing a moment of opportunity—not only to recover from conflict, but to lay the foundations for a more stable, inclusive and prosperous future for all,” he wrote.
Guterres arrived in Syria on Saturday in the first visit by a U.N. secretary-general to the country since 2009. During the visit, he reaffirmed the United Nations’ support for Syria and called on the international community to make every effort to support the Syrian people.
