Damascus, July.12 (SANA) Speaker of the Syrian People’s Assembly Abdul Hamid al-Awak on Sunday called on lawmakers to consolidate efforts to bolster the role of the legislative institution and overcome the long-standing stereotype that, he said, had been imposed on parliament by the defunct regime for more than six decades.

Addressing the Assembly following the completion of the formation of its executive bureau, al-Awak stressed that responsibility for parliament is collective and that its success or failure depends on all members.

He added that all parliamentary activities should be conducted under the Assembly’s dome in a manner that consolidates its institutional credibility and legislative role.

Al-Awak stated that the Assembly would cooperate with the executive authority, headed by the President of the Republic. He noted that Syria is experiencing a difficult transitional phase and that the Syrian citizens expect concrete outcomes from both the legislative and executive branches.

He stressed that close cooperation and facilitating the legislative process are essential to support government efforts in post-conflict recovery and service delivery.

On behalf of the Assembly members, al-Awak extended condolences to the families of the victims of the ferry accident in the Euphrates River in Deir Ezzor.

He also announced that the Assembly would begin drafting its internal rules of procedure through a dedicated drafting committee before submitting them to members for a vote.

The session was adjourned until Sunday, July 26, 2026, to allow the committee to conclude its work.

Assembly Secretary Mueyed Habib said history would record Syrians gathering under the parliament’s dome, stressing that the responsibility entrusted to lawmakers is substantial and requires coordinated efforts within parliamentary committees and the presidential bureau.
