Damascus, July 9 (SANA) Syria welcomed a decision by the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to regain its rights and privileges under the Chemical Weapons Convention, describing the step as important that reflects progress in implementing its obligations and constructive cooperation with the organization’s Technical Secretariat in dealing with the legacy of the chemical weapons program of the deposed regime.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said the decision follows the suspension of Syria’s rights in 2021 over violations related to the use of chemical weapons.
The ministry added the decision, which was supported by 67 States Parties, reflects the international community’s confidence in the transformation that Syria has undergone and in the efforts of its institutions to fulfill their obligations.
It affirmed that the outcome demonstrates broad support for restoring Syria’s full role within the organization.
The decision was based on progress made in investigations, identifying those responsible and eliminating the remnants of the deposed chemical weapons program, contributing to the objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention and to regional and international security.
The ministry expressed appreciation to the countries that supported the decision, particularly Qatar, for its diplomatic efforts in helping achieve consensus, and reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to continuing full and transparent cooperation with the OPCW in support of the convention’s objectives and justice for victims.
