Hamburg, June 30 (SANA) Syria is participating in the Hamburg Sustainability Conference to rally international support for the country’s recovery efforts, with a particular focus on economic and social recovery, refugee return and the planned closure of displacement camps nationwide by the end of 2026.

Speaking to SANA on the sidelines of the conference, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Hind Kabawat said Syria was taking part in the event for the first time, alongside a large gathering of heads of state, government officials and ministers, including German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Kabawat said the conference agenda covers a range of global sustainability issues, while a series of bilateral meetings will be held on the sidelines to discuss development projects, sustainability initiatives and German support for Syria’s recovery efforts.

She said Syria’s message at the conference is centered on mobilizing support for the Syrian people, advancing sustainable development, empowering young people and women, and assisting communities affected by the war.

The minister said Syria is implementing the “Syria Without Camps” initiative under Presidential Decree No. 59, with the goal of closing all displacement camps in the country by the end of 2026.

“We hope for full support for Syria’s efforts to enable displaced people to return to their homes,” Kabawat said.

She added that Syria remains open to international cooperation in support of the Syrian people, sustainable development, peace and social cohesion.

Later, Minister Kabawat, and Mohammad Baraa Shukri, the chargé d’affaires of the Syrian Embassy in Berlin, met with World Food Programme (WFP) Acting Executive Director Carl Skau on the sidelines of the 2026 Hamburg Sustainability Conference.
