U.S. reinstates sanctions on UN expert Francesca Albanese

Washington, May 28 (SANA) The United States has reinstated sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, according to a notice published by the U.S. Treasury Department.

The move follows a decision by a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to temporarily block an earlier ruling that had suspended the sanctions.

The administrative order, issued on Friday, allows the U.S. government to once again classify Albanese as a sanctioned foreign national while legal proceedings continue.

Reuters reported that Albanese had been removed from the sanctions list earlier this month after a federal judge temporarily halted the measures following a legal challenge filed by her husband and daughter.

Washington imposed sanctions on the Italian UN official in July 2025 over what U.S. authorities described as efforts to encourage the International Criminal Court to pursue action against US and Israeli officials, executives and companies.

Albanese has previously criticized Israeli military operations in Gaza and called for increased international accountability measures related to the conflict.
