Washington, May 22 (SANA) U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States “fully controls” the Strait of Hormuz through what he described as a naval blockade forming a “steel wall,” adding that the U.S. Navy was carrying out its mission effectively.
Trump told reporters at the White House that no vessels were currently reaching or leaving Iran because of the blockade. He also said Washington wanted the Strait of Hormuz to remain open without imposing transit fees.
According to Reuters, Trump said the United States had “eliminated 75 percent of Iran’s missile capabilities,” adding that estimates indicated Iran was losing around $500 million per day.
Commenting on nuclear negotiations with Tehran, Trump said talks were continuing and added: “We will get what we want one way or another.” He reiterated that Washington “will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon.”
Trump also said the United States would not permit Iran to retain highly enriched uranium, adding that such material would be seized and likely destroyed.
The U.S. president said on Wednesday that negotiations with Iran had entered their final stages, warning of further strikes if Tehran does not agree to a deal.
