Jeddah, May 22 (SANA) The Executive Director of the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Hadi bin Ali al-Yam said the recent visit of OIC to Syria has created new opportunities for cooperation and coordination between OIC institutions and the Syrian Arab Republic.
Al-Yami said the visit also lays the groundwork for broader joint Islamic efforts aimed at supporting the Syrian people and contributing to national recovery initiatives.
Describing the mission as the commission’s first official visit to Syria since assuming his position, al-Yami said it reflected a commitment to constructive engagement and institutional partnership based on mutual respect.
He explained that the delegation’s meetings enabled direct discussions with political leaders, government institutions, judicial and academic bodies, and representatives of Syrian civil society organizations.
According to al-Yami, the visit was conducted under the mandate issued by the 51st Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers and at the invitation of the Syrian government.
He noted that the commission serves as one of the principal organs of the OIC, providing advisory opinions on human rights matters and supporting technical dialogue and cooperation among member states.
Al-Yami said discussions with Syrian counterparts focused on practical areas where OIC institutions and member states could contribute to Syria’s recovery efforts, particularly in institutional development, rule of law, transitional justice and social protection.
The talks also addressed support for vulnerable groups, including women, children, persons with disabilities and internally displaced people, alongside cooperation in legislative development, human rights education, youth empowerment, civic awareness and digital transformation.
The executive director added that the commission can support Syrian institutions through technical consultations, specialized training workshops, judicial and legal capacity-building programs, governance support and cooperation in legislative review and policy development.
Regarding future steps, al-Yami said efforts would now focus on translating the outcomes of the discussions into practical cooperation initiatives and identifying priority areas for technical assistance and institutional capacity-building.
The delegation visited Syria between May 17 and 19 and held meetings with senior government officials, national institutions, academic and judicial bodies, as well as representatives of civil society organizations involved in humanitarian response and recovery activities.
