New York, May 15 (SANA) Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ibrahim Olabi said Syria would no longer be “just a victim,” stressing that the country, its government and its people are committed to ensuring that others do not experience the suffering endured by Syrians

The Permanent Mission of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations in New York on Thursday published remarks delivered by Olabi during a previous U.N. Security Council session marking the 10th anniversary of a council resolution on the protection of hospitals in conflict zones.

During the session, Olabi said Syrians continue to recall the displacement of residents from the city of Aleppo in 2016 following attacks on hospitals and the targeting of doctors and nurses, which he said prevented medical personnel from treating the wounded and forced many healthcare workers to flee.

Olabi noted that Syrian doctors who were forcibly displaced had appeared before the Security Council years earlier carrying signs reading “Stop bombing hospitals,” adding that such violations ceased only after the liberation of Syria.

He said recent international references to Syria’s removal from lists related to violations against hospitals reflected efforts to protect healthcare facilities and patients, as well as adherence to relevant codes of conduct.

Olabi also said Syria has launched a transitional justice process based on accountability for those responsible for crimes and violations.

He stressed that Syrians now speak not only from the perspective of victims, but also as a people who experienced the tragedy firsthand and are working to prevent its recurrence while ensuring the protection of civilians and medical facilities.
