Washington, May 8 (SANA) U.S. President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva discussed economic cooperation, trade and regional security during talks at the White House on Thursday, despite ongoing differences over several international issues, including the Middle East conflict.
According to Agence France-Presse, Trump praised Lula as a “dynamic” leader, while the Brazilian president described the meeting as “frank and positive.”
The two leaders focused on strengthening bilateral economic ties, including tariff-related issues, and expanding cooperation in combating organized crime, drug trafficking and arms smuggling.
Lula said Brazil was prepared to establish a regional and international task force aimed at countering organized crime, adding that Trump had assured him the United States would not interfere in Brazil’s upcoming presidential election.
Both sides also discussed potential cooperation in rare earth industries, as Brazil holds some of the world’s largest reserves of the strategic minerals used in advanced technology manufacturing.
Brazil and the United States signed an agreement in April to expand cooperation against arms and drug trafficking through enhanced data-sharing on cargo container inspections between the two countries.
