Brussels, April 17 (SANA) –The European Union plans to enhance cooperation with Syria by resuming official political contacts and reactivating a 1978 cooperation agreement, according to a document from the EU’s diplomatic service cited by Reuters.

The document indicates that the EU will launch a high-level political dialogue with the Syrian government on May 11, marking a significant step in rebuilding relations after years of suspension.

Expanding economic cooperation

The EU is also planning to expand economic ties through a new framework for trade and investment, support for private sector financing, and reforms to improve the business environment, in addition to establishing a technical center for economic assistance.

The document highlights cooperation with Syria on facilitating the safe, voluntary and dignified return of refugees, a priority issue for European countries.

Strategic role for Syria

According to the document, the EU is interested in integrating Syria into regional connectivity projects, including the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor, potentially positioning the country as a key hub for transport, energy and digital connectivity.

Syria has also gained importance as a potential alternative energy route amid disruptions linked to the ongoing regional war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Security cooperation

The EU expressed readiness to cooperate with Syria in areas of security, counterterrorism, organized crime and drug trafficking, including possible support for police training.

The document also reaffirmed EU support for implementing the agreement signed in January between the Syrian government and SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces), including a gradual integration process in military and administrative sectors.

The move comes amid a broader shift in EU policy following the fall of the deposed regime, transitioning from sanctions and isolation to engagement aimed at supporting stability and reconstruction in Syria.
