GENEVA , Jan. 27 (SANA) A growing number of Syrian refugees are expressing a desire to return home, with around 1.4 million having already done so, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said Monday. Nearly two million internally displaced people have also returned to their areas of origin.
Speaking on behalf of UNHCR in Syria, spokesperson Celine Schmitt said refugees reported that the conditions that forced them to flee no longer exist. UNHCR supports returnees with cash assistance and transportation aid where possible.
Schmitt added that UNHCR operates 79 community centres across Syria, providing protection services, civil documentation support, mental health and psychosocial assistance, and shelter and livelihood aid for returnees.
80 percent of Aleppo IDPs return
In Aleppo province, Schmitt said that about 80 percent of nearly 100,000 people displaced by recent clashes have returned home. Assistance continues for those remaining in camps, including tents and shelter support.
UNHCR resumes services in al-Hol Camp
Regarding al-Hol Camp, Schmitt said the Syrian government confirmed its support for UNHCR and other humanitarian organizations, enabling teams to resume services, including the distribution of bread and water and healthcare provided by groups such as the Red Cross.
She added that UNHCR, in coordination with the United Nations and local and international partners, is helping camp residents return home and reintegrate into their communities.
