German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, accompanied by Syria’s Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed al-Saleh, conducted on Thursday a field visit to the city of Harasta in the Damascus countryside, where he surveyed neighborhoods severely damaged by years of war.

Wadephul expressed deep concern over the destruction, particularly after meeting displaced children, and emphasized Germany’s moral responsibility to support Syria’s recovery.
He reaffirmed Berlin’s readiness to assist the Syrian government in rebuilding efforts and promoting long-term stability.
Minister al-Saleh highlighted the extensive damage caused by the former regime and the urgent need for reconstruction to enable the return of displaced families and restore essential services. He also voiced Syria’s interest in drawing on Germany’s post-war experience and expanding bilateral cooperation.
Both officials underscored the importance of strengthening ties between Syria and Germany, noting that the Syrian diaspora in Germany serves as a bridge for cultural and diplomatic engagement.
Wadephul reiterated Germany’s support for lifting economic sanctions and advancing Syria’s path toward peace and inclusive governance.
