Damascus, Aug. 27 (SANA) Syria and Saudi Arabia have entered into a memorandum of understanding on Thursday to develop postal services and strengthen technical and logistical cooperation between the Syrian Postal Corporation and Saudi Post (SPL).
The memorandum was signed by Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdul Salam Haykal and Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics Services Saleh bin Nasser al-Jasser.
Haykal told SANA that the agreement marked another step towards strengthening cooperation between Syria and Saudi Arabia. He said bilateral cooperation in the telecommunications sector extended across a broad range of areas, including the strategic SilkLink project.
Discussions between the two sides addressed several implementation-related issues, particularly the delivery of mail and small parcels to and from Syria, as well as prospects for regional integration between the two countries in postal and logistics services, Haykal added.
Syrian Postal Corporation Director General Imad al-Din Hamad said the memorandum provided for cooperation across several areas, with a focus on technical and logistical matters and the transfer of Saudi expertise to Syria.
He said the cooperation would help modernize Syria’s postal infrastructure, improve postal services and raise the standard of services provided to citizens and the business sector.
SilkLink is a strategic project launched by Syria’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in cooperation with Saudi Telecom Company (stc) to establish a major fibre-optic network running across Syria.
