Hama, April 9 (SANA) Minister of Energy Mohammad al-Bashir announced on Thursday the start of work on the Zayzoun thermal power plant in the western Hama countryside, with a planned capacity of 1,000 megawatts.
The project is part of an agreement with Qatar’s UCC Holding to develop power generation projects across Syria with a total capacity of 5,000 megawatts, including both conventional and renewable energy projects.
Al-Bashir said in a post on X that the project follows extensive technical discussions and negotiations over contracts and memorandums of understanding.
“This step marks the transition of the energy sector from signing agreements to implementation, and from planning to reconstruction,” he said, adding that authorities aim to translate agreements into tangible improvements in public services.
The project is intended to strengthen electricity infrastructure and increase generation capacity in the region, which has faced electricity supply challenges.
The agreement with UCC includes the construction of four power plants across Syria with a combined capacity of 4,000 megawatts, in addition to solar energy projects totaling 1,000 megawatts across four locations.
Al-Bashir laid the foundation stone for the Zayzoun plant last year as part of broader plans to expand the country’s energy capacity.
