Doha, July 9 (SANA) Qatar on Thursday condemned attacks targeting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and called on all parties to remain committed to dialogue and diplomacy amid renewed military tensions between the United States and Iran.
According to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani discussed the latest developments during a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The Qatari minister said attacks on commercial vessels threaten international maritime security, undermine confidence and risk destabilizing the region despite ongoing efforts to reduce tensions.
He stressed the importance of implementing the memorandum of understanding previously agreed between the United States and Iran, saying adherence to the agreement would help preserve regional security and maintain progress toward stability.
The Qatari foreign minister reaffirmed Doha’s support for diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the escalation and reaching a comprehensive agreement that would contribute to lasting peace and stability in the region.
The United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 covering several outstanding issues, including maintaining a ceasefire and safeguarding navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The agreement has since come under strain following Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the strategic waterway and subsequent U.S. strikes on Iranian targets. On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the memorandum of understanding had come to an end.
