Washington, June 16 (SANA) U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that a temporary agreement with Iran includes provisions designed to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, adding that Washington would not allow Iran to develop nuclear capabilities.
Speaking during the G7 summit in Evian, France, Trump said a 14-point memorandum of understanding with Iran, the details of which have not yet been made public, is intended to block Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Trump criticized the 2015 nuclear agreement negotiated under former President Barack Obama, calling it “a path to a nuclear weapon.”
U.S. and Iranian officials are expected to meet in Switzerland to begin 60 days of technical negotiations on issues including the future of highly enriched uranium and the possible lifting of sanctions.
Trump also said developments in Lebanon could influence the implementation of the temporary agreement, amid the continued presence of Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.
Turning to Ukraine, Trump stressed the need for Russia and Ukraine to reach a negotiated settlement to end the war that has continued since February 2022.
He said he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 summit and plans to hold another meeting with him.
“Russia and Ukraine have lost enormous numbers of people,” Trump said, adding that he intends to focus on efforts to resolve the conflict after Washington had previously concentrated on the Iranian file.
The three-day G7 summit opened on Tuesday in Evian, with the war in Ukraine and the Iran agreement among the key issues on the agenda.
