Washington, June 12 (SANA) U.S. forces intercepted and shot down two Iranian attack drones near the Strait of Hormuz on Friday after they were launched from Iran in what appeared to be an attempt to target commercial shipping in the strategic waterway, a U.S. official said.
According to Reuters, the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the drones were successfully destroyed by U.S. forces before reaching their intended targets.
Despite heightened regional tensions, commercial shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz continues to move normally, the official added.
The incident came a day after U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the establishment of what it described as secure maritime transit corridors for commercial vessels operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM said the corridors are open to commercial shipping, excluding vessels subject to sanctions and restrictions related to Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes, serving as a key passage for a large share of global oil and energy exports.
