Washington, May 18 (SANA) The U.S. Treasury Department announced Monday the imposition of sanctions on Cuba’s main intelligence agency and nine Cuban nationals, in the latest step in Washington’s escalating pressure campaign against the island.
According to AFP, the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said the measures target Cuba’s intelligence agency alongside nine individuals, including the ministers of communications, energy, and justice, as well as senior officials of the Communist Party and at least three military generals.
The United States has intensified its pressure on Cuba since January, with President Donald Trump hinting at the possibility of removing the country’s leadership by force — in a manner similar to U.S. military action in Venezuela earlier this year. Washington has also cut off Cuba’s supplies of Venezuelan oil, which had been providing the island with roughly half of its fuel needs.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel warned earlier Monday of the consequences of any U.S. military action against his country and its wide-ranging implications for peace in the region.
