Bucharest, May 5 (SANA) Romania’s parliament voted Tuesday to remove Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan in a no-confidence motion, a move that could deepen political instability in the country.
The motion passed with 281 votes, comfortably exceeding the required 233 in the 464-seat parliament, according to Agence France-Presse.
Lawmakers backing the motion accused Bolojan of implementing austerity measures that they said had worsened living conditions and increased economic pressure on citizens.
George Simion, leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, welcomed the result, saying it marked the end of what he described as a period of rising taxes and declining living standards.
Bolojan rejected the accusations, calling the motion “based on lies,” and said he had taken office under difficult circumstances, making necessary decisions to address economic challenges.
Bolojan assumed office in June 2025 with the support of a four-party coalition aligned with the European Union, including the Social Democratic Party, following months of political deadlock after the annulment of the presidential election in November 2024.
