Riyadh/Doha, April 8 (SANA) — Saudi Arabia and Qatar on Wednesday welcomed the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as a step toward de-escalation and regional stability, according to statements issued by their foreign ministries and reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) and Qatar News Agency.
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry said the agreement aims to reduce tensions and strengthen stability in the Gulf region. It reiterated the Kingdom’s support for mediation efforts led by Pakistan to reach a lasting agreement that addresses longstanding issues affecting regional security.
The ministry stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to international navigation in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, without restrictions.
It expressed hope that the ceasefire would provide an opportunity for a comprehensive and sustainable calm, contributing to regional security and preventing actions that affect the sovereignty and stability of states.
In a separate statement, Qatar welcomed the ceasefire announcement, describing it as an initial step toward de-escalation and urging swift efforts to prevent further escalation in the region.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s mediation efforts and those of other parties involved in facilitating the ceasefire.
It emphasized the need for full adherence to the ceasefire, calling for conditions that support dialogue and stability. The ministry also highlighted the importance of respecting state sovereignty and avoiding actions that undermine regional security.
Doha further stressed the need to ensure the security of maritime routes and the free flow of international trade in accordance with international law, noting their role in maintaining regional stability and global supply chains.
Both countries reaffirmed their support for diplomatic solutions and peaceful efforts, emphasizing dialogue and adherence to international law as key to resolving crises and preventing wider repercussions.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a two-week suspension of military operations against Iran, conditional on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring secure navigation, while indicating progress toward a broader peace agreement.
