Washington, March 27 (SANA) – The US Treasury Department announced that upcoming banknotes will feature President Donald Trump’s signature for the first time in the country’s history, as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of US independence. For the first time since 1861, the signature of the Treasury Secretary will be removed from the notes.
According to a Treasury statement cited by Sky News on Friday, the first $100 bills bearing Trump’s signature alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be printed in June, with other denominations to follow in the coming months.
Currently, the Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing continues to produce notes featuring the signatures of former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Treasurer Lynn Malerba, whose signatures mark the end of a century-and-a-half tradition.
Bessent described the new banknotes as a “national occasion” to commemorate the founding of the United States. He highlighted what he described as the country’s economic growth, financial stability, and the dominance of the dollar during Trump’s presidency, saying that issuing notes with the president’s signature is “the best way to celebrate the achievements of our country and our president” on this historic occasion.
Treasury officials confirmed that the general design of the notes will remain unchanged, with the only modification being the replacement of the Treasury Secretary’s signature with that of the president.
Earlier attempts to issue a circulating $1 coin featuring Trump’s name failed due to US laws prohibiting the depiction of living individuals on coins. Under the law regulating the printing of Federal Reserve notes, the Treasury has broad authority to adjust designs to prevent counterfeiting.
This step comes as part of a wider trend by the Trump administration to place the president’s name on government buildings, institutions, programs, warships, and other currency.
