Riyadh/Manama, March 22 (SANA) Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense said Sunday that its air defense systems intercepted five drones and one ballistic missile launched from Iran toward the Kingdom, according to an official statement.
The ministry added that additional missiles fell in uninhabited areas after being launched toward Riyadh, while interceptions were carried out over the Eastern Province, a key energy-producing area in eastern Saudi Arabia.
Defense spokesman Turki al-Maliki stated that Saudi forces continue to counter repeated aerial threats targeting critical infrastructure, particularly facilities linked to the energy sector.
In Bahrain, the General Command of the Bahrain Defense Force said it had intercepted and destroyed 143 missiles and 244 drones since the start of Iranian attacks on Feb. 28.
The Bahraini command stated that the use of ballistic missiles and drones against civilian objects constitutes a “serious violation” of international humanitarian law and the United Nations Charter, warning of direct threats to regional security and stability.
Authorities in both Saudi Arabia and Bahrain called on residents to exercise caution, avoid affected areas and follow official instructions.
The developments come amid broader escalation across the Gulf region, marked by continued missile and drone activity and reported disruptions to maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, contributing to volatility in global energy markets.
