Capitals, March 18 (SANA) Over the past hours, Iran has intensified its attacks, launching barrages of Khorramshahr-4 missiles and hypersonic cluster munitions, targeting more than 100 Israeli military and security sites, killing two Israelis and injuring about 200 others, in addition to causing extensive damage.
In turn, Israel has stepped up its air operations in Lebanon, carrying out its heaviest strikes on Beirut since the confrontation began and issuing broad evacuation warnings. This escalation is unfolding alongside continued strikes and tensions in Iraq and the Arabian Gulf.
A dangerous escalation and expansion of military operations
Attacks in Iraq have intensified, with the targeting of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, military sites near Baghdad International Airport, and positions of Iranian-aligned Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). Over the past 24 hours, armed factions have carried out multiple operations targeting U.S. bases, resulting in deaths and injuries.
Meanwhile, Arabian Gulf states reported intercepting Iranian missiles and drones, with debris falling in several areas without major damage.
Internal pressures and escalating shifts in Washington
In Washington, Congress is entering a volatile phase as hearings on the war begin, amid growing political pressure on the Trump administration. This comes alongside increasing internal divisions, including the resignation of the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center in protest over the war.
International moves
On the diplomatic front, Riyadh is hosting a meeting of Arab and Islamic foreign ministers aimed at containing the crisis and enhancing coordination. However, Iran maintains that any ceasefire must include Lebanon.
Bushehr, nuclear concerns
Concerns have resurfaced over the Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran, after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the site was struck Tuesday evening without causing damage or injuries. The facility remains highly sensitive as Iran’s only operational civilian nuclear plant.
The global economy
Economically, oil prices have risen above $100 per barrel, while shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz persist. The United Nations warned of serious impacts on global food security due to rising energy and transport costs.
The conflict is entering a more complex phase, shifting from direct strikes to a multi-front confrontation involving overlapping dynamics, making it increasingly difficult to contain, according to analysts.
