Cairo, March 12 (SANA) Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Iranian attacks on Gulf countries and Jordan reflects broad international support for the Arab position.
The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2817 on Wednesday, condemning Iranian assaults on Gulf countries and Jordan and calling them violations of international law and threats to international peace and security.
In a phone call Thursday with Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Aboul Gheit said continued Iranian attacks on several Arab countries demonstrate “persistent miscalculations that cannot be justified,” according to a statement on the Arab League website.
He stressed that Arab states reject allowing their territories and resources to be used as arenas for regional confrontations or settling disputes.
Aboul Gheit also praised Bahrain’s role as the Arab member of the Security Council, saying Manama helped mobilize international backing for the resolution condemning attacks against Gulf states and Jordan.
Arab League spokesperson Jamal Rushdi said the resolution’s adoption by 13 votes in favor signals widespread international rejection of the attacks and confirms clear solidarity with the Arab position.
Resolution 2817 was sponsored by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Jordan.
