Researchers develop air-powered artificial muscles to boost robot strength

Washington, April 6 (SANA) Researchers at Arizona State University have developed bio-inspired artificial “muscles” that enable robots to lift up to 100 times their own weight and operate in extreme environments, according to a study cited by Interesting Engineering.

The technology, developed by a research team led by doctoral student Eric Wiseman, is designed to expand the capabilities of robots beyond conventional motor-driven systems.

The artificial muscles are made from helical polymer structures that mimic natural muscle movement by expanding and contracting using small amounts of air, eliminating the need for traditional power sources.

Researchers said the design allows robots to be lighter and more flexible, while enabling them to function in conditions that typically disable motor-based machines, including high temperatures and abrasive environments.

The team said the technology could be used in a range of applications, including disaster response, elderly care, marine exploration and industrial sampling.
