Lattakia… a city on the Mediterranean combines history and cultural diversity

Lattakia, SANA- Lattakia city, located on the Syrian coast overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, is a city with a rich history, as some sources indicate that its roots date back to the Bronze Age, between 1200 and 1000 BC. Over the centuries, the city has witnessed multiple civilizations that have left their mark on its architecture and social fabric.

Cultural Diversity

The architectural character established by the city’s early founders is still evident in the heart of the city through its old streets, such as Quwatli, 8 March, and Adnan al-Maliki, all the way to its seafront, according to Bassam Jablawi, Vice President of the Al-Adiyat Association.

Jablawi articulated to a SANA correspondent that Latakia is characterized by cultural diversity, reflecting a harmonious social fabric, noting that the coexistence between its various components has made it a model of stability and coexistence.

Archaeological Sites

The city includes archaeological landmarks dating back to various eras, most notably the Arch of Triumph and the Bacchus Columns, in addition to a number of neighborhoods and sites such as Souk El Daya, the Ashar Market, and Sheikh Daher. The Bazaar Mosque is one of its most prominent ancient religious landmarks, along with the historic baths and the old bazaar market.

A citizen noted that a number of historic buildings were damaged by the earthquake that struck the region in February 2023.

Tourist Destination

Lattakia possesses natural and historical assets that make it an important destination.

Some residents said that the return of expatriates to visit after the country’s liberation from the former regime is a positive indicator of security and stability.

The residents of Lattakia describe their city as an open city that welcomes visitors and provides them with a distinctive status, making it a suitable destination for both tourism and investment. Thanks to its long history and social diversity, it continues to play its role as a pivotal city on the Mediterranean, combining the past and the present and expressing the values of coexistence and openness.
