Damascus, Sept. 6 (SANA) Jawdat al-Hashemi Secondary School, one of Damascus’ longstanding educational institutions, has undergone its first comprehensive rehabilitation since its establishment in 1929, with former students, including Syrian expatriate doctors and engineers, contributing to the project.
Education Minister Mohammad Abdulrahman Turko and Damascus Governor Maher Marwan Idlibi visited the school Sunday as the 2026-2027 academic year began. The rehabilitation was carried out in cooperation with Mercy Without Limits under the supervision of the Education Ministry.
The project preserved the school’s historic architectural character while modernizing its educational facilities. The two-story building has 27 classrooms and 17 additional rooms, including administrative offices, a library, laboratory, computer room and interactive learning spaces, with capacity for more than 1,000 students.

School principal Khaled al-Baqai said the extensive work covered electrical and sanitation systems, windows, playgrounds, gardens and other facilities.
Deputy Education Minister for Educational Affairs Youssef Annan said the participation of former students, particularly expatriates and graduates with advanced degrees, reflected their commitment to supporting education in Syria.
The rehabilitation coincides with the start of Syria’s 2026-2027 academic year, with more than 5.2 million students returning to schools across the country.
