Damascus, April 2 (SANA) – Damascus University’s Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering has inaugurated a Smart Dynamic Systems Lab dedicated to drone technologies, in cooperation with the Tech Pioneers Community, as part of an educational event on unmanned aerial systems titled “Sky Tech Drones.”
The launch event was attended by Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdul Salam Haykal, alongside academics and technology specialists.
The lab, the first of its kind at Syrian universities, aims to train specialized cadres in drone technologies, including programming, design and applied use, while enabling students to obtain certified drone piloting licenses in coordination with relevant national bodies.
Equipped with modern facilities and specialized staff, the lab will provide hands-on training through dedicated courses, allowing participants to gain practical experience in a controlled environment.
Investment in future skills
Minister Haykal stressed that progress in Syrian universities reflects significant efforts despite limited resources, emphasizing that investment in education and scientific research remains the foundation for building the future.

He noted that the current challenge lies in shifting from technology consumption to production, highlighting the need to expand technical industries, particularly in drone technologies, which integrate aviation, artificial intelligence, communications and service applications.
Expanding the role of universities
Deputy Minister of Higher Education for Scientific Affairs Ghiyath Waqouz underscored the importance of moving beyond exam-based learning toward practical engagement in labs and scientific initiatives, encouraging students to transform knowledge into productive outcomes.
Damascus University President Mustafa Saem al-Dahr pointed to the broad potential of drone technologies across military, civilian, healthcare and service sectors, reaffirming the university’s support for initiatives that promote technology localization and innovation.
Toward competitions and international participation
Lab supervisor Mahmoud Bani Marjah said the facility includes specialized workspaces, computer-aided design and modeling rooms, 3D printing equipment, and an indoor testing track for drones, providing a safe training environment.
He added that future plans include forming student teams, organizing competitions, and preparing participants for national and international events, strengthening the university’s presence in advanced technology fields.
Damascus University is also working to formalize drone pilot licensing in coordination with relevant authorities, opening new professional opportunities in fields such as surveying, monitoring, agriculture and emergency response.
