Damascus, July 19 (SANA) More than 300 Syrian and international companies gathered in Damascus on Saturday for the country’s largest textile exhibition, highlighting efforts by manufacturers and the government to revive an industry that was once a major contributor to Syria‘s economy after years of conflict and disruption.
The first edition of the Syria International Textile Exhibition (NASTEX 2026), held at the Damascus New Fairgrounds under the patronage of President Ahmad al-Sharaa, brought together textile producers, investors and business representatives seeking to rebuild commercial networks, attract investment and restore Syria’s competitiveness in regional markets.
Representatives of participating companies said the exhibition provides a platform to showcase new products and technologies while facilitating business partnerships and reconnecting Syrian manufacturers with customers at home and abroad.
Organizers said the participation of more than 300 local and foreign companies reflects growing interest in Syria’s textile sector, which has been severely affected by years of war, damage to industrial facilities and the departure of many factory owners and skilled workers.
Taysir al-Ahmad, a local manufacturer and one of the exhibition’s organizers, said the event was designed to help revive Syria’s textile and furnishings industries and encourage Syrian industrialists abroad to return and resume production in cooperation with government institutions.
Yahya Abboudi, representing one of the participating companies, said the exhibition highlights innovations in textiles, furnishings and hospitality products while creating opportunities for companies to establish commercial partnerships.
Sharif Shawa said rebuilding domestic manufacturing would be critical to restoring the competitiveness of Syrian-made products, although local producers continue to face strong competition from imported goods.
Ali Sharbati said the exhibition also sends a message that Syrian manufacturers are resuming production inside the country and rebuilding ties with customers and regional markets.
He added that Syria’s textile industry retains significant advantages, including domestic cotton production and decades of manufacturing expertise, which could help it regain its historical position if supported by favorable economic conditions.
