Brussels, June 23 (SANA) The European Commission said on Tuesday it would invest €5.8 million to establish two regional centers aimed at strengthening the security and resilience of subsea cable networks in the Baltic and Mediterranean seas.

The initiative is part of broader European efforts to protect critical digital and energy infrastructure amid growing concerns over threats to undersea communication and power links.

According to the Italian news agency AKI, the Commission has also launched a €40 million funding initiative to improve the European Union’s ability to repair damaged telecommunications cables and respond to disruptions more quickly.

The Mediterranean center will receive €3.3 million in funding and will be coordinated by Italy in partnership with Greece, Cyprus and Malta. The facility will support information sharing, threat monitoring and coordinated responses to cross-border incidents affecting underwater infrastructure.

A second center in the Baltic region will receive €2.5 million and will be coordinated by Finland, working alongside Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Latvia and Sweden. The project is intended to strengthen regional monitoring capabilities, improve coordination among security operations centers and enhance responses to potential threats.

The projects form part of the EU Action Plan on Cable Security, which seeks to improve the protection of Europe’s undersea data and energy networks through greater cooperation, faster incident detection and stronger emergency response capabilities.
