Baku, June 19 (SANA) Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh said Syria is pressing ahead with economic and financial reforms aimed at attracting investment, supporting economic recovery and strengthening cooperation with regional and international financial institutions.

Speaking during a session titled “Recovery and Resilience” on the sidelines of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) annual meetings in Baku, Barnieh said the government is working to improve the business environment and create conditions conducive to investment and sustainable growth.

He said Syria’s priorities include implementing a recovery plan focused on key sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, water and transportation as part of broader reconstruction efforts.

The IsDB meetings, which include a special session on Syria, are examining the country’s development needs, recovery priorities and opportunities to expand cooperation with regional and international partners.

On the sidelines of the meetings, Barnieh held talks with IsDB President Mohammed Al Jasser on strengthening cooperation and restoring the bank’s role as a key partner in supporting Syria’s recovery and development.

The discussions focused on existing financial commitments, development financing priorities and mechanisms to support projects aimed at promoting stability and economic growth. Barnieh stressed the importance of enhancing Syria’s engagement with the bank, while Al Jasser reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting the country through financing and technical assistance.

Barnieh also met with Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) Secretary-General Ghiath Shabsigh to discuss the development of Islamic finance in Syria, including opportunities to introduce sukuk and benefit from international expertise in expanding the sector.
