Damascus, June 13 (SANA) Finance Minister Mohammed Yisr Barnieh met on Friday with a mission from the Fiscal Affairs Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to discuss ways of strengthening technical cooperation in the reform and modernization of tax and customs administration.
According to a statement issued by the Finance Ministry, discussions with the IMF mission focused on prospects for cooperation in modernizing and developing Syria’s tax and customs systems, enhancing compliance and revenue collection procedures, simplifying administrative processes, benefiting from international expertise in digital transformation, and improving the institutional framework of tax and customs administrations.
The talks also addressed mechanisms for boosting the technical and institutional capacities of personnel working in the tax and customs sectors, with the aim of improving efficiency, enhancing the quality of services provided to taxpayers and stakeholders, and promoting transparency and good governance in the management of public resources.
Minister Barnieh affirmed the importance of partnership and cooperation with the IMF and of benefiting from its technical expertise in supporting financial and administrative reform programs and capacity-building efforts.
He also stressed the central role of coordination between the Ministry of Finance and the General Authority for Border Crossings and Customs in achieving modernization and development goals.
The IMF mission expressed its readiness to continue providing technical assistance, specialized advisory services, and training in priority areas within the tax system.
