Doha, May 5 (SANA) Qatar National Bank (QNB) Group has launched digital payment solutions and international card acceptance services in Syria, following a recent decision by the Central Bank of Syria to open the sector to global payment networks.
The move marks a step toward modernizing Syria’s financial infrastructure and expanding digital payment systems, the group said in a statement carried by Qatar News Agency (QNA).
Adel Ali Al-Malki, QNB’s senior executive vice president for retail banking, said the bank was the first globally to support international card payments in the Syrian market, which is undergoing rapid changes driven by efforts to reduce reliance on cash.
“We look forward to delivering a seamless, secure and instant digital payment experience,” he said.
QNB said the rollout follows coordination with multiple stakeholders and complies with local regulations and international standards. The services will be introduced in phases to support sustainable expansion across sectors.
On Monday, the Central Bank of Syria allowed licensed banks and electronic payment firms to work with global networks such as Visa and Mastercard, in a move aimed at advancing financial modernization and digital inclusion.
The central bank is implementing broader reforms to rebuild financial institutions, strengthen monetary tools and expand digital banking services, as part of efforts to restore international financial links and support economic recovery.
