Damascus, April 28 (SANA)     Syria’s Ministry of Agriculture, in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), held a forum in Damascus on Tuesday to discuss ways to strengthen agricultural resilience and food systems in Syria.

The event, titled Seeds of Resilience, focused on evaluating community-based agricultural projects and identifying practical approaches to help farmers adapt to economic and climate-related pressures.

Several initiatives implemented in Idlib province were presented, including projects aimed at preserving climate-resilient local seed varieties, reviving potato seed production and supporting olive-sector value chains.

Officials from Syria’s Agriculture Ministry said such projects can help sustain farm production, restore locally adapted crop varieties and improve food supply.

GIZ representatives said the program, supported by the German government and the European Union, seeks to promote sustainable agriculture, support small and medium-sized enterprises and encourage climate-smart farming methods.

An EU representative said the bloc aims to empower Syria to reclaim its role as a regional agricultural powerhouse, enabling it to resume exports by 2030 by leveraging its vast potential in the sector. Noting that the EU will work to assist returning Syrians in regaining their lands, boosting their production capacity and resilience against challenges, while also backing the Syrian Agriculture Ministry’s plans to create job opportunities.

Participating organizations also highlighted ongoing support for farmers through irrigation systems, greenhouses, seed distribution and programs to preserve plant genetic resources adapted to harsh climatic conditions.
