IMF warns AI poses risks to global monetary system stability
Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund

Washington, April 13 (SANA) The International Monetary Fund warned on Monday that the global monetary system remains unprepared to handle emerging risks from artificial intelligence, particularly in cybersecurity.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said in remarks cited by Agence France-Presse that the world “currently lacks the capacity to protect the international monetary system from large-scale cyber threats,” stressing the need to strengthen regulatory safeguards to maintain financial stability.

She added that the challenges, recently discussed in the United States, could arise in other regions, highlighting the need for broad international cooperation.

The comments come ahead of the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, and follow an emergency meeting held by U.S. regulators with major bank executives to assess the impact of a new artificial intelligence model developed by Anthropic.

The company said on April 7 it would limit the release of its new model, “Mythos,” citing concerns over its ability to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in operating systems and major web browsers, raising concerns among financial and regulatory authorities.
