A wheat cargo vessel arrives at Tartous port as railway teams begin transporting part of the shipment to silos in Damascus and Homs - SANA

Tartous, April 7 (SANA) – A cargo vessel carrying about 45,000 tons of wheat arrived Tuesday at Tartous port as part of efforts to secure bread supplies and strengthen Syria’s food security system.

Nidal Abdul Qader, deputy director of the Tartous railway branch, told SANA that railway teams began transporting around 10,000 tons of the shipment immediately after the vessel’s arrival to the al-Nasiriyah silos in Damascus and Shanshar silos in Homs.

He said coordination is ongoing with Tartous port authorities and the General Establishment for Cereal Processing and Trade to move wheat and other cargoes based on required quantities and the rail access available to storage sites.

Abdul Qader said rail transport helps move large quantities quickly while reducing pressure on road networks and lowering shipping costs compared with truck transport.

The shipment forms part of broader government efforts to reinforce strategic wheat reserves and ensure rapid delivery to silos at lower cost.
