Syrian Petroleum launches project to treat oil-produced water

Damascus, Mar. 1 (SANA) The Syrian Petroleum Company has begun implementing an environmental project to treat water produced alongside oil at several fields, including Al-Taim, Al-Azbeh and Al-Mazraah, as part of efforts to reduce the environmental impact of production operations.

Safwan Sheikh Ahmed, Director of Institutional Communication at the company, told SANA that the project treats the water according to specialized technical standards before reinjecting it into wells to enhance reservoir pressure and improve production efficiency, combining environmental and technical benefits.

He added that the project will continue for several months under a comprehensive plan aimed at promoting on-site environmental sustainability and balancing production needs with natural resource protection.

Produced water poses environmental challenges in oil fields due to residual hydrocarbons and compounds that can affect soil and ecosystems if not properly treated. Previously collected in dedicated ponds, the water now undergoes a sustainable treatment process addressing the issue at its source.
