Damascus, Jan. 18, (SANA) Syria’s Finance Minister, Mohamed Yisr Barnieh, said Sunday that the return of the Jazira region, northeastern Syria, to state control marks a major milestone with economic, political, and social benefits.
In a statement to SANA, Barnieh said the reintegration will strengthen state finances, support reconstruction and development projects, and signal stability to domestic and international investors. He stressed that development cannot progress while parts of the country remain under radical armed groups, making the return of the region critical.
Barnieh noted that in 2025, the Ministry of Finance maintained strict control over spending, resulting in a modest budget surplus the first in nearly four decades despite significant national needs. He added that the Jazira region’s resources, including oil, gas, water, agriculture, and tourism, will provide additional fiscal space and allow greater investment in infrastructure, services, energy, health, and education. Earlier, the Syrian Arab Army announced it had retaken the city of al-Tabqa, the Euphrates Dam, multiple towns and villages in Raqqa province, and several oil and gas fields after expelling PKK-terrorist militias.
