Damascus, March 26 (SANA) Palestinian heritage crafts, particularly hand embroidery, play a key role in strengthening national identity and preserving cultural heritage within the Palestinian community.
More than traditional craftsmanship, this art form serves as a medium for documenting historical and cultural connections, reinforcing deep ties to the land and collective heritage amid ongoing challenges posed by occupation and displacement.
From intricate embroidery to decorative motifs, these handicrafts convey popular narratives and shared memories, reinforcing their role as both cultural expressions and tools of resistance against attempts to erase identity. Beyond their symbolic significance, they also provide essential livelihoods and empower emerging generations of artisans, ensuring the continuity and development of this artistic tradition.
Palestinian artisans and community members say these products are more than heritage; they are symbols of a connection to the homeland and its history.
Hani al-Raqouei, a craftsman and owner of a Palestinian heritage shop in Damascus, told SANA that these crafts bear symbols and meanings that reflect Palestinian identity. He said they serve as a living historical record, expressing a deep connection to the land and a commitment to preserving heritage.
Randa Bashir, a Palestinian woman, said the products help safeguard cultural identity from distortion or appropriation by Israeli occupation. She highlighted the role of younger generations in preserving this heritage, keeping it alive in their collective memory and strengthening their connection to their homeland, in addition to supporting livelihoods.
Recognized as intangible cultural heritage, Palestinian embroidery and related crafts remain vital in preserving the geographical and cultural distinctiveness of Palestinians in Syria and across their communities.
