Syrian Artist Rehan transforms rocks into dreamy paintings

Lattakia, Feb. 22 (SANA) In a world where artists tend to gravitate toward canvas and paper, artist Zain Rehan has chosen a different path, where silent pieces of nature become vibrant, living spaces.

Under his artistic brand “Zain Rehan Art,” Zain’s work extends beyond mere craftsmanship; it forms a spiritual relationship with stone, transforming it from a solid material into a carrier of emotions and human stories.

The Beginning of a Passion… From the Seashore to the World of Colors

Zain’s story with this unique art form dates back approximately three years, and the beginning was entirely unplanned.

Zain recounts that the first spark ignited by chance while he was on a beach, when the smoothness of a stone and its unique shape caught his attention.

In that moment, he realized that stone is not merely a solid material, but a space that carries the spirit of nature.

That first experience became the nucleus of a continuing passion. Zain relied entirely on self-learning; he did not enroll in specialized courses. Instead, his school was experimentation, practice, and continuous research.

He learned from every mistake he made and from every new stone he held in his hand, which granted his style maturity and professionalism over time.

A Special Technique… When the Brush Dialogues with Rock

Painting on stone does not follow fixed rules; rather, it requires a deep understanding of the material’s nature.

Zain prefers to work on smooth limestone stones due to their ability to absorb and fix colors, and because their relatively flat surface helps highlight fine details

The work journey begins with preparing the stone by washing it thoroughly to remove dust and dirt, then allowing it to dry completely. Sometimes, he applies a base layer to unify the surface. Zain uses acrylic paints for their quality and durability, along with brushes of various sizes for fine details and soft-tipped pencils for initial sketching.

To ensure the longevity of the work, he concludes the painting process by applying a transparent protective layer (varnish) that shields the colors from moisture and scratches.

He also takes into consideration that each type of stone (porous or smooth) requires a different technique and number of paint layers.

Paintings That Pulse with Life… Nature and Humanity as Sources of Inspiration

In his artistic style, Zain leans toward “simplified realism” blended with a dreamy touch. His goal is not merely to transfer an image, but to convey a feeling. His drawings draw inspiration from magnificent nature, from warm human relationships such as scenes of motherhood, and from the tranquility of sunsets and the details of animals.

Zain believes that every stone has its own memory and shape, and the true challenge lies in utilizing the stone’s irregular form to serve the artistic idea rather than letting it become an obstacle.

This interaction between the stone’s shape and the painting’s subject grants each work a uniqueness that cannot be replicated, carrying a story told through colors.

Challenges of Patience… Precision in Small Spaces

Despite the beauty of this art form, it carries significant challenges. Zain points out that the most difficult part is adapting to the stone’s shape, in addition to the need for considerable patience; a single piece may take anywhere from several hours to a full day to complete, given the need to paint in multiple layers and wait for the colors to dry between applications.

Furthermore, maintaining precision in details on a small surface represents a technical challenge, not to mention the risk of the stone breaking during work. Zain approaches these obstacles with a philosopher’s spirit, considering breakage part of the nature of handmade work. He either attempts to repurpose the piece in a different way, or, if that is not possible, he learns from the experience and starts anew.

A Look Toward the Future… Art as a Message, Not Just a Craft

Like other handicraft artists, Zain faces marketing challenges, especially given the absence of a dedicated shop or gallery. He relies heavily on social media platforms to reach audiences and communicate the value of his artistic work.

However, his ambition does not stop at current boundaries. He continuously develops his skills by following the works of other artists and experimenting with new techniques and ideas. In a message to beginners, Zain advises starting without fear of making mistakes and cultivating patience. He affirms that stone may seem difficult at first, but with persistence, it transforms into a beautiful space for creativity.

The work of artist Zain Rehan represents a model of how to transform the simple into the extraordinary. Through his patience and emotional touch, he has succeeded in creating a distinctive artistic identity, reminding us that beauty can be found in the most unexpected places.
