The National Museum in Damascus returns with a world-class new look

Damascus, Dec 02, (SANA) – The National Museum in Damascus is one of the most significant cultural institutions in the Middle East. Its extensive collection highlights Syria’s rich history, a land that has been home to some of the world’s earliest civilizations. The museum offers a unique opportunity for visitors, researchers, and students to explore thousands of years of human heritage through curated archaeological treasures.

History and Establishment

Over the decades, the museum has expanded its wings to accommodate artifacts uncovered in major ancient cities such as Mari, Ugarit, Ebla, Palmyra, and Dura-Europos—sites that played pivotal roles in shaping early human civilization.

Founded in 1919, the museum was initially housed in a small building within the historic al-Adiliyah School in Old Damascus. As archaeological discoveries across Syria grew, the need for a larger and more advanced space became clear. In 1936, the museum moved to its current location along the Barada River in the heart of the capital.

Main Sections of the Museum

1.  Prehistoric Wing

Displays stone tools, primitive weapons, and early human remains, illustrating the development of human society on Syrian soil since the Stone Age.

2.  Ancient Near Eastern Wing

Highlights artifacts from Ugarit, Mari, Ebla, and Dura-Europos. It includes cuneiform tablets, statues, murals, and early written documents.

3.  Classical Antiquity Wing

Showcases Greek and Roman sculptures, inscriptions, and architectural elements, including some of the region’s most impressive mosaic panels.

4.  Islamic Art Wing

Exhibits Islamic manuscripts, ceramics, textiles, and metalwork. The wing also houses rare Qur’anic manuscripts dating back several centuries.

5.  The Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi Façade

A reconstructed Umayyad palace façade, transported stone by stone from the Syrian desert, is one of the museum’s most iconic architectural displays.

Renovation and Restoration Efforts

In recent years, the museum underwent extensive restoration to preserve its collections and modernize the visitor experience. With these improvements, it has now reopened, reaffirming its role as a cultural and educational landmark in the region.

Cultural Significance

The museum serves as a bridge between the ancient world and contemporary audiences, housing unique artifacts not found anywhere else. It provides scholars unparalleled access to primary archaeological materials. It preserves and promotes Syria’s cultural identity, acting as a major destination for cultural tourism in Damascus.

The National Museum in Damascus is more than a repository of artifacts; it is a living encyclopedia of human civilization. With its recent restoration and reopening, the museum invites visitors to explore the layers of history that shaped Syria and, by extension, much of the ancient world. It stands as a testament to the country’s enduring cultural legacy and its vital role in the story of humanity.
