United Nations, New York, SANA – The Security Council last night unanimously condemned the assassination of Russia’s Ambassador in Ankara Andrey Karlov, considering it a “senseless act of terror”, as described by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
The Council said, in a statement issued unanimously by its 15 member states, that it condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist attack and it offers condolences to the family of the diplomat and to the Russian Government.
For his part, Ki-Moon emphasized that there can be no justification for the targeting of diplomatic personnel and civilians, and that he is “following the unfolding situation closely” and wished the other people who were reportedly injured in the attack a speedy and full recovery.
Earlier on Monday, Russia’s Ambassador in Ankara was shot dead by a Turkish extremist terrorist who works as a police officer.
The European Union and the NATO also condemned the assassination of Karlov, as the EU considered it an “inconceivable act”.
The EU Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on twitter that he offers condolences to the Russian diplomat’s family and to the Russian people, affirming that nothing can justify such a vicious act.
In a letter to the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said that she is deeply shocked by the inconceivable attack which targeted the Russian Ambassador.
She added in a statement that the EU condemns the attack in the strongest terms, and expresses solidarity with Russia in the face of that horrifying act.
