Resolution on “economic and social repercussions of the Israeli occupation on the living conditions of the Palestinian people” adopted

New York, SANA – The Economic and Social Council at the United Nations has adopted the draft Palestinian resolution on “Economic and social repercussions of the Israeli occupation on the living conditions of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan”, by a vote of 42 in favour to 2 against (Australia, United States) with 2 abstentions (Honduras, Panama).

In a statement before the voting, the Syrian Arab Republic delegation highlighted the increasing Israeli violations despite hundreds of international resolutions which the Israeli occupation disregarded, not to mention the involvement of international powers to provide an international cover in order to help the occupation authorities continue their repressive practices against Arab populations in Palestine and the Occupied Syrian Golan.

The delegation sheds light on the suffering of the Palestinians and the Syrian citizens in the Occupied Syrian Golan due to the occupation authority’s procedures which target their daily lives and fundamental rights, in addition to the confiscation of their lands, the theft of their water resources in favor of Israel’s settlement projects and the continuity to bring more settlers and offer financial incentives to each family which has been living in the occupied Golan for at least five years.

The statement revealed the Israeli occupation authorities and extremist settlers’ continuous exploitation of the natural resources of Golan, the bulldozing of agricultural soil, crop burning, the uprooting of fruit-bearing trees and preventing farmers from marketing their products.

It also indicated the Israeli occupation’s oppressive practices to put more pressure on Golan people such as imposing high taxes and fees, threating residents to demolish their houses not to mention other discriminating practices to elevate their suffering and force them to give up their national stances and adherence to their Syrian identity and homeland.

These practices coincided with the arbitrary arrest of Golan inhabitants, topped by Sudqi al-Maqt whom the Israeli occupation authorities re-arrested on February 25, 2015, after serving 27 years in the Israeli occupation for exposing the Israeli role in supporting members of Jabhat al-Nusra and other armed terrorist groups in the Separation of Forces Line area.

The delegation noted that what the Syrians, in Golan and whole Syrian territory, really need is to provide an immediate international support to eliminate terrorism which has undermined their stability and confront state terrorism carried out by the Israeli occupation authorities against the Syrian people in the Occupied Golan.

It is no more acceptable for the so-called international community to be complacent about supporting the legitimate rights of the Syrians in Golan and the Palestinian people under the occupation, the delegation added.

For his part, the US representative regretted the resolution as biased against the Israeli occupation, in turn, the Israeli entity representative described the resolution as “biased and unreliable”.
