Washington/Moscow, SANA – US Secretary of State John Kerry is expected in Moscow next week to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov over Syrian political process.
Kerry said in a statement Tuesday, following a meeting with his Georgian counterpart Mikheil Janelidze in Washington, “I will be travelling next week to Moscow to meet with President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov in order to discuss how we can effectively move the political process forward and try to take advantage of this moment.”
A new round of Intra-Syrian dialogue started Monday in Geneva with a meeting between the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura and the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic headed by Bashar al-Jaafari, Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN.
Russia and the US agreed on the “cessation of hostilities” agreement in Syria that came into effect on 27 February.
In Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the main topic of Kerry’s visit that they are working on will be dedicated to Syria.
Earlier Tuesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Russia and the US would continue their joint combat against terrorists, including ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organizations.
Russia and Syria announced Monday a decision to reduce Russian forces in Syria as of Tuesday after Russian Aeorspace forces have been since last September launching air strikes against ISIS, al-Nusra and other terrorist organizations affiliated to them upon request from the Syrian government.
