De Mistura: Crisis in Syria needs to be solved by Syrians

Brussels, SANA- UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura reiterated the necessity of finding a solution to the crisis in Syria by the Syrian people only, pointing out that UN role is confined to preparing ground for inter-Syrian dialogue.

“The UN role as a mediator is in fact confined to facilitating dialogue circumstances,” he said during an interview with RT TV Channel, parts of which had been published Friday on its website.

But, the UN envoy added, this does not mean that countries aligned with either side of the government or opposition are not concerned with assisting in efforts to reach that objective.

De Mistura said he believed Moscow consultative meeting held late last January was fruitful, hoping a new round of talks will be convened soon.

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that a second round of Moscow consultative Meeting will be held next April in Moscow.

Russia hosted a round of inter-Syrian dialogue in Moscow which ended on January 29. The Syrian government’s delegation and five opposition groups agreed to a set of Russian-proposed principles called “Moscow Principles”.

The principles focused primarily on preserving Syria’s sovereignty and unity, fighting all forms of terrorism, settling the crisis peacefully and politically and rejecting any foreign interference.
