Putin, Trump affirm commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity

Da Nang, Vietnam, SANA-Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday their commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, affirming that the ultimate political solution to the political crisis in Syria must be forged through the Geneva process.

In a joint statement on the sidelines of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Vietnam, Presidents Putin and Trump reaffirmed their commitment to the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Syria according to the Security Council’s resolution No. 2254.

The two Presidents called on all the Syrian parties to participate effectively in the Geneva political process, reiterating the need to continue to work together to combat Daesh (ISIS) terrorists till fully eliminating them.

The statement said that Presidents Putin and Trump discussed the pressing need to alleviate the humanitarian suffering in Syria, urging the UN member states to increase their contributions to meet the humanitarian needs in the coming months.

According to the statement, the two Presidents agreed  to maintain the existing communication channels to prevent dangerous incidents in the Middle East.

The statement affirmed the importance of preserving the de-escalation zones in Syria and discussing the decision on establishing a de-escalation zone in the southwestern area in Syria.

Lavrov, Tillerson discuss situation in Syria

In a relevant context, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US State Secretary Rex Tillerson discussed situation in Syria and the Russian-American joint steps towards reaching a political solution to the crisis in the country.

In statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Lavrov and Tillerson held a separate meeting on the sidelines APEC Summit in which they discussed the political settlement for the crisis in Syria and the joint steps adopted by Russia and the US in this regard.

Peskov: Putin, Trump agreed on joint statement on Syria

Earlier on the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that Presidents Putin and Trump during their brief meeting on the sidelines of the APEC summit approved a joint statement on Syria.

Peskov told Sputnik Agency that the document was prepared by the experts of the two countries and agreed upon by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US State Secretary Rex Tillerson.

He indicated that the statement was specifically prepared for the meeting in Da Nang, where the APEC summit is taking place.

Presidents Putin and Trump are participating in APEC Summit which will conclude its activities today.
